It is important that you always check your manual and specific specifications to ensure you are towing safe amounts. It all starts with the GCWR. This article lists the GCWR and max trailer weight for all engine, trim, and package options taken from the 2020 Jeep Gladiator owners manual and a 2020 Gladiator Brochure.

This is meant to be used as a reference, and you are responsible for making sure you are towing safely.

How much can a Jeep Gladiator Tow?

All Jeep Gladiators can tow a minimum of 4000 lbs. Some options with tow packages can accommodate up to 7650 lbs.

The engine type, axle ratio, tow package, and transmission all affect the weight rating of the Jeep Gladiator.

What Jeep Gladiator should you buy for max towing?

The Sport or Sport S with an automatic transmission with the Max Tow Package will provide the highest towing capacity of 7650 lbs.

2020 Jeep Gladiator Engine Specs

3.6L Pentastar V6 Engine

The 3.6 L Pentastar V6 engine, also known as the 3.6 L V6 24V VVT is the only engine available in the 2020 Jeep Gladiator.

It comes in a 6 speed manual transmission and an 8 speed automatic transmission.

Transmissions

The Jeep Gladiator 3.6 L Pentastar engine comes in both manual and automatic transmission types. In every trim level, the automatic provides additional towing strength than the manual alternative.

Towing Features

The 2020 Gladiator has a feature called Trailer Sway Damping. This system monitors vehicle movement and changes brake pressure to improve handling when driving.

Bed Features

There is only a singular bed size for all Jeep Gladiators of 5 ft. It implements a three-position tailgate and 4 tie-down loops to ensure safe transport of your cargo (Brochure).

A full 115 bolt/400-watt power outlet is also installed in the truck bed to power small appliances on the go and when tailgating.

An additional special feature in the bed of the Gladiator is the Trail Rail System. This is a customizable and adjustable tie-down system that comes with various accessories from Jeep for maximum storage capacity and functionality.

Other Features

Just like other Jeeps, the Gladiator has 4 removable doors and options for both soft and hardtops.

It does however have a nice feature that adds a lockable storage bin under the rear passenger seats.

Packages

Trailer-Tow Package

The trailer tow package on the Jeep Gladiator simply allows the Gladiator to be used as a towing truck.

It does not increase the towing capacity of any of the trims it is added to. It is available as an add-on to all trim levels.

This package includes:

• Class IV Hitch Receiver
• Trailer Hitch Zoom

Max Tow Package with 4.10 Axle Ratio

The Max Tow Package offered by Jeep comes with the same features as the trailer tow package but adds:

Do you need a towing package?

If you plan to use the Jeep Gladiator for towing then you do need a towing package. Otherwise, you will not have the appropriate equipment to install a trailer.

As mentioned earlier the regular tow package does not affect the towing capacity of the vehicle, so all values listed below are for the Jeep Gladiator with or without a tow package.

The payload capacity of the Gladiator ranges from 1075 to 1600 lbs.

This means that the Gladiator can hold an extra 1,100 to 1,600 lbs in the bed and cab in cargo weight safely.

Rear Step Bumper Towing vs Hitch Receiver Towing

Towing always requires some type of hitch, but the Jeep Gladiator can allow for bumper towing.

As you will notice, the tow package added to any Gladiators does not affect the towing capacity. This is because this package only adds a hitch receiver. You have the option to add your own hitch receiver if you don’t buy the tow package.

If you do not buy the tow package or install a hitch receiver, the max towing capacity is 3,500 lbs and the tongue weight max load is 350 lbs. This weight is limited to a bumper-mounted ball.

This means that all of the listed towing capacities above for everything over 3,500 lbs require a trailer hitch receiver or tow package.

What is a Bolt Pattern?

A bolt pattern refers to the orientation and alignment of the bolts for a wheel. It refers to the number and the spacing of the required bolts for the rim to attach to the vehicle. This is also known as a lug pattern.

Bolt patterns cannot be changed without an adapter. The bolt pattern that comes with a car is standard to that vehicle.

The first number in a bolt pattern refers to the number of bolts. This value is usually 4, 5, 6, or 8.

The second number in a bolt pattern refers to the diameter of the lug circle. See the next section for examples on how to measure the diameter.

How to Measure Bolt Pattern?

Bolt pattern is measured by first counting the number of lugs on the wheel then measuring the diameter.

This diameter can be measured and presented in either inches or mm.

The diameter is measured by an imaginary circle that goes through the center of all the bolts. An example for a 4 bolt and 5 bolt pattern is shown below.

The diameter can be measured from the center point of one bolt to the center point of one across it. But an odd bolt pattern diameter is measured with an imaginary circle through the center of all the bolts.

Why is the Bolt Pattern Important?

You need to know the bolt pattern of your vehicle or truck in order to select the appropriate rims for your car. The bolts are what attach the rim and therefore the wheel/tire to your car. To install a rim to the car, the bolts must align with those of the vehicle.

If you have a rim that doesn’t match the exact bolt pattern of your vehicle, you may be able to use an adapter that can convert one bolt pattern to another.

These adapters, however, do also act as spacers. This means that your wheels will stick out more out of the side of your truck making your wheel track wider.

This is usually only done for cosmetic reasons. If using an adapter, you should not plan to use the car for towing or hauling. They tend to decrease the capabilities of the truck and usually cannot stand the high impact and power required to carry these loads.

If you are interested in using a different bolt pattern, you will have to look for adapters/spacers that convert the bolt pattern from one thing to another.

The 3.0 L EcoDiesel engine in the Jeep Gladiator gets 22 mpg city and 28 mpg highway and the 3.6 L Pentastar engine gets 16 mpg city and 23 mpg highway (manual) and 17 mpg city, 22 mpg highway (automatic).

This information applies to the 2023-2020 Jeep Gladiator trucks.

Jeep Gladiator Miles Per Gallon by Engine

3.0 L EcoDiesel Engine MPG

The 3.0 L Ecodiesel engine is an optional engine available in the Jeep Gladiator.

It provides 260 hp and 442 lb.-ft of torque.

This engine in all trims gets 22 mpg city and 28 mpg highway and 24 mpg combined.

3.6 L Pentastar Engine MPG

The 3.6 L Pentastar engine in the Jeep Gladiator is the standard engine that comes equipped in all new Gladiators.

This engine can provide 285 hp and 260 lb.-ft of torque.

This engine is available in both manual and automatic transmissions which slightly alter the miles per gallon.

Though both transmissions have a combined mpg of 19, the manual transmission has a 16/23 city/highway mpg and the automatic transmission has a 17/22 city/highway mpg.

Jeep Gladiator Range (Miles per Tank)

We can estimate the range of a Jeep Gladiator per fill up by using the size of the fuel tank and the estimated fuel efficiency.

By knowing the estimated fuel efficiency (miles per gallon) we can multiply that by the fuel tank (number of gallons) to get the number of miles that likely can be traveled with a full tank of gas on the Jeep Gladiator.

3.0 L EcoDiesel Engine Range

The 3.0 L EcoDiesel engine comes with a fuel tank of 19 gallons.

This means that the 3.0 L EcoDiesel on the Jeep Gladiator can drive an estimate 418-532 miles per full tank of gas.

3.6 L Pentastar Engine Range

The 3.6 L Pentastar engine comes with a fuel tank of 22 gallons.

This means that the 3.6 L Pentastar engine in the Jeep Gladiator can drive and estimated 352-506 miles per fill up.

What Impacts Fuel Efficiency?

The fuel efficiency provided in this document is given by estimated values from the manufacturer and what you MAY expect to get on average. However, this isn’t the exact gas mileage you will necessary get when driving. So we will discuss some of the major factors

Cargo/Towing

With pickup trucks, it is not unusual to have excess cargo in the bed of your truck or be towing some kind of trailer.

This is probably going to have one of the biggest impacts on fuel efficiency.

The more power required to move the heavier load, the more gas will be consumed to go the same distance.

Driving Behavior

Driving behaviors such as accelerating speed, cruise control, and braking patterns can have an impact on mpg.

For example, a car that accelerates too quickly will use more energy to get up to speed.

Similarly, if you find yourself braking more frequently rather than cruising while driving, you will find yourself using more gas.

Road Conditions

Then of course the road conditions will have an impact on this as well. Hills, swervy roads, and even poor road conditions can impact mpg, usually reducing fuel efficiency.

The Jeep Gladiator inherently doesn’t accommodate towing. This is why Jeep offers towing packages.

What is in the Jeep Gladiator Max Tow Package?

The Max Tow Package on the Jeep Gladiator is the most premium tow package offered. It is only available, however with the Sport and Sport S trims equipped with the 3.6 L Pentastar engine.

The features included in the Gladiator Max Tow Package (2023) are:

• 240 Amp Alternator
• All-Terrain Tires
• 4.10 Axle Ratio
• Trac-Lok Anti-Spin Rear Differential
• 2-Piece Fender Flares
• Class IV Hitch Receiver

The regular towing capacity for the Sport and Sport S without the package is only 4,000 lbs but with the Max Tow Package, the towing capacity increases to 7,700 lbs.

It also increases the GCWR to 12,800 lbs and GVWR to 6,250 lbs.

This package costs an extra MSRP of $1,695.

Other Towing Features in the Gladiator

There are a few standard and optional towing features included on the Gladiator that aren’t part of the towing packages.

The standard towing features on the Jeep Gladiator are:

• 4/7 Pin Trailer Wiring Harness
• Trailer Sway Damping

The only available feature that can be added outside the towing packages is a Trailer Brake Controller.

How Much Can You Tow With The Max Tow Package?

The Max Tow Package increases the towing capability of the Jeep Gladiator because it adds features that improve the power of the truck, particularly the axle ratio.

The higher the axle ratio, the higher the towing capacity.

The regular Gladiator has an axle ratio of 3.73 but the Max Tow Package improves this ratio to 4.10.

This translates to an increase in towing capacity to 7,700 lbs compared to 4,000 lbs without the package.

Are There Any Other Towing Packages Available on the Gladiator?

Also available on the Gladiator is the Trailer Tow Package.

This package is the lower level package offered with the Gladiator. It provides much fewer features compared to the Max Tow Package.

The Trailer Tow Package on the Gladiator includes:

• 240 amp alternator
• Heavy duty engine cooling
• Class IV hith receiver
• Trailer hitch zoom

This package is also much cheaper with a price point of $695.

This package has little to know impact on the towing capacity of the Gladiator, but provides the necessary equipment to actually tow with the Gladiator.

As mentioned, the Gladiator is not equipped to tow in it’s stock form, so in order to use this truck for towing applications, one of the Tow Packages is necessary.

It has limited features such as towing capacity (which you can read about here) and bed size.

The Jeep Gladiator only has one bed size. This bed size is 5 ft in length. This is considered small in the world of pickup trucks.

The 2022 Jeep Gladiator bed is 60.3 inches long, 56.8 inches wide, 44.8 inches wide between wheel wells, and 33.9 inches high.

The bed size for the 2021 and 2022 models are exactly the same so all dimensions listed in this article refer to the dimensions for both years.

Jeep Gladiator Interior Dimensions

Cab Size

One thing that sets the Jeep Gladiator apart from other trucks on the market is that it comes in one cab size.

This significantly keeps down VINs and complexity.

This cab size can accommodate 5 seats and holds a total of 103 cu. ft. of space. Unlike MANY other pickup trucks with two rows, the back row is only 3 inches less in legroom.

Jeep Gladiator Exterior Dimensions

The Jeep Gladiator is comparable to many other mid-size to full-size trucks on the market.

Independent of the trim, the exterior dimensions of the Gladiator remain the same.

Overall the Gladiator is 218 inches in length, 73.8 inches in width, and 75 inches in height to the top of the cab.

Jeep Gladiator Bed Sizes

As mentioned before, the Gladiator only has one type of truck bed and it is considered small compared to many other beds on the market.

This bed is 5 ft and 0.3 inches from end to end. I haven’t seen any kind of bed this small. Other short beds in the market are around 5.5 ft.

The standard bed on the market is 6.5 ft, so this is significantly smaller. This isn’t the best truck to select for its bed use. Though it provides more space than most other SUV’s and obviously much more than the Jeep Wrangler, it is a great option for those looking for some extra utility with a pickup, with the look of a Wrangler.

This truck bed is 60.3 inches long, 56.8 inches wide, and 44.8 inches wide between the wheel wells.

It is also 33.9 inches deep. This is one place in which the Gladiator stands out. This means there is more ability to stack things higher in the bed of the truck, but it is harder to access for the average person without any extra step assistance.

Bed Styles

Most half-ton and mid-size trucks today are only equipped with one bed style. A bed style does not refer to the size of the bed but rather the shape.

There are two main shapes of bed styles. The first is fleetside and the second is stepside.

Fleetside bed styles are those that have the wheel wells of the back axle tires protruding into the bed like the one displayed above. This means that the outside of the truck is flat on the sides of the bed.

The stepside truck beds are just that. The wheels present themselves as a step on the outside of the truck bed. This means that the truck bed is rectangular in shape and doesn’t have any wheel wells inside.

Fleetside beds are the most common today and are the only style offered in the Jeep Gladiator.

Gladiator Bed Features

Tie Down Brackets

There are 4 built-in tie-downs in the bed of the Gladiator which makes it easier to load cargo with many forms and shapes. The deep bed also makes it able to accommodate some larger items with less intense strapping.

Power Outlets

Built in the back of the truck bed is a 115-Volt full power outlet. This provides you the opportunity to charge and power any electronics for your next adventure.

This provides some additional versatility for camping, or ya know, can help you make some margaritas on your next beach trip.

Multiple tailgate positions

This sounds more exciting than it is. Though it doesn’t have fancy hinge systems that open like doors like some of the other new trucks, it does have three positions.

It opens in the traditional way that most truck beds do, downward. So it can be fully closed and fully open.

But, they also allow the truck bed tailgate to sit at a 45-degree angle. This helps to accommodate some large sheets or slats that may interfere with the wheel well in the side of the bed.

Truck Bed Upgrades from Jeep

Tonneau cover

When you first order a Jeep Gladiator, there are three options for which you can add a tonneau cover.

There is a roll-up cover for $625, a Soft Tri-Fold cover by Mopar also for $625, and a Hart Tri-Fold cover by Mopar with a price of $995 (Jeep.com).

If you need a quick choice for a tonneau cover, these aren’t bad options, but there are cheaper ones on the market, especially for the soft versions that you might want to look at instead. Of course there are some benefits to ordering through Jeep.

They may help with installation, and they may have a warranty program as well.

Spray in Bed-Liner

Though the base surface of the Gladiator bed is a solid steel frame, it is susceptible to damage. One of the best ways to protect the bed is with a spray-in bed-liner.

Jeep offers a Mopar bed-liner for $525 which seems a bit steep for this technology. For less than half the price, you can do it yourself with the following kit.

Trail Rail System

This system is a specifically designed bed cargo management system that allows full bed access for storage with an additional tie-down system that sits on the edges of the bed that allow cargo basket to sit on top.

The Trail Rail System is a Jeep Trademarked system in which adjustable tie-downs are able to be used in conjunction with the truck bed cross rails and cargo basket.

This supplies more torque for higher towing with a maximum torque of 442 lb.-ft but supplies less hp at 260. It does have better fuel efficiency than the Pentastar with an estimated 22 mpg city and 28 mpg highway.

The Jeep Gladiator 3.6 L Pentastar engine comes in both manual and automatic transmission types. In every trim level, the automatic provides additional towing strength than the manual alternative.

The manual engine is a 6-speed transmission with code D478. The automatic transmission which is also equipped on the diesel Jeep Gladiator engines is an 8-speed transmission with the code 850RE.

Just like other Jeeps, the Gladiator has 4 removable doors and options for both soft and hardtops.

The trailer tow package on the Jeep Gladiator simply allows the Gladiator to be used as a towing truck.

It adds a Class IV hitch receiver, trailer hitch zoom, 240-amp alternator, and a heavy-duty engine cooling system.

It does not increase the towing capacity of any of the trims it is added to. It is available as an add-on to all trim levels.

Jeep Gladiator Payload Capacity

The payload capacity of the Gladiator ranges from 1050 to 1600 lbs.

This means that the Gladiator can hold an extra 1050 to 1700 lbs in the bed and cab in cargo weight safely.

Check the chart below if you need the specific payload capacity of your Gladiator.

Rear Step Bumper Towing vs Hitch Receiver Towing

Towing always requires some type of hitch, but the Jeep Gladiator can allow for bumper towing.

As you will notice, the tow package added to any Gladiators does not affect the towing capacity. This is because this package only adds a hitch receiver. You have the option to add your own hitch receiver if you don’t buy the tow package.

If you do not buy the tow package or install a hitch receiver, the max towing capacity is 3,500 lbs and the tongue weight max load is 350 lbs. This weight is limited to a bumper-mounted ball.

This means that all of the listed towing capacities above for everything over 3,500 lbs require a trailer hitch receiver or tow package.

All Jeep Gladiators require that you purchase the tow package if you plan to use this vehicle for towing as the base does not come with a trailer hitch receiver.

It is important that you always check your manual and specific specifications to ensure you are towing safe amounts. It all starts with the GCWR. How much can a Jeep Gladiator Tow?

All Jeep Gladiators can tow a minimum of 4000 lbs. Some options with tow packages can accommodate up to 770 lbs.

The engine type, axle ratio, tow package, and transmission all affect the weight rating of the Jeep Gladiator.

What Jeep Gladiator should you buy for max towing?

The Sport or Sport S with an automatic transmission with the Max Tow Package will provide the highest towing capacity of 7,650 lbs.

2023 Jeep Gladiator Engine Specs

3.6L Pentastar V6 Engine

The 3.6 L Pentastar V6 engine, also known as the 3.6 L V6 24V VVT engine has a maximum horsepower of 285 and torque of 260 lb.-ft.

It has a manual and automatic version and is the base engine in all Jeep Gladiator trim levels.

It estimates to get 16 mpg in the city and 23 mpg on the highway.

3.0L V6 EcoDiesel Engine

The 3.0 L V6 EcoDiesel engine also known as the 3.0 L V6 Turbo Diesel engine is an automatic-only engine offered as an option on every trim.

It has a maximum horsepower of 260 and torque of 442 lb.-ft.

It overall gets better gas mileage than the Pentastar engine with 22 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway.

Transmissions

The Jeep Gladiator 3.6 L Pentastar engine comes in both manual and automatic transmission types. In every trim level, the automatic provides additional towing strength than the manual alternative.

The manual engine is a 6-speed transmission with code D478. The automatic transmission which is also equipped on the diesel Jeep Gladiator engines is an 8-speed transmission with the code 850RE.

Trailer Sway Damping is also built into the Gladiator as a standard feature which prevents trailer sway from cross winds or sharp movement and automatically adjusts brake pressure to keep the vehicle moving straight.

ParkView Rear Backup camera is a pretty standard backup camera that has a 4X trailer hitch zoom to better align the truck when back up to attach a trailer. This is available upon purchase.

Trailer Brake Control which adjusts the brake pressure of the trailer is availalbe by the dealer as well.

Bed Features

There is only a singular bed size for all Jeep Gladiators of 5 ft. It implements a three-position tailgate and 4 tie-down loops to ensure safe transport of your cargo (Jeep.com).

In order to tow with the Jeep Gladiator out of stock, a package must be added. There are two packages available. The first package simply adds the necessary equipment to make the gladiator have the capability to tow, and the second maximizes the towing capacity of the Gladiator.
