2016 Ford f150 oil type

2016 F150 Engine Types and Specifications

F150 5.0 L V8 Engine

The 5.0 L V8 engine in the 2016 F150 produces 385 hp @ 5,750 RPM and 387 lb.-ft of torque @ 3,850 RPM.

Of all the engine types in the 2016 model, this truck provides the most horsepower indicating the greatest rate of acceleration offered in the engine.

F150 2.7 L EcoBoost Engine

The 2.7L EcoBoost engine in the 2016 F150 provides 325 hp @ 5,750 rpm and 375 lb.-ft of torque @ 3,000 rpm.

The EcoBoost engine includes a turbocharger designed to increase fuel efficiency with stronger power.

The design of this engine actually produces energy and power from the exhaust by using that force to push more air into the engine (What is the EcoBoost Engine?).

F150 3.5 L Engine

The 3.5 L engine is a less powerful version of the 5.0L engine. It produces 282 hp @ 6,250 rpm and 253 lb.-ft of torque @ 4,250 rpm.

This engine is the weakest of the group and also has the lowest towing and payload capacity.

F150 3.5 L EcoBoost Engine

The 3.5 L EcoBoost engine is the turbocharged equivalent of the 3.5 L engine. It produces 365 hp @ 5,000 rpm and 375 lb.-ft @ 3,000.

Compared to the 3.5 L engine, this engine is much more powerful. Similar to the 2.7 L EcoBoost, you can notice that there are increased power benefits to using this type of engine.

2016 F150 5.0 L V8 Oil Type, Capacity, & Filter

The 5.0 L V8 engine in the Ford F150 takes 7.7 qt of SAE 5W-30 engine oil and uses a Motorcraft FL-500-S filter.

Ford recommends that you use the Motorcraft version of these two items, which I’ve found on Amazon below, but I believe as long as you choose to use synthetic blend oil with an appropriately sized oil filter, you should have no problems.

How often should you change your F150 Oil?

According to the 2016 Ford F150 manual, under normal usage conditions, the oil in your truck should be changed every 7,500-10,000 miles (12,000-16,000 km).

For trucks with frequent towing or heavy loading, this decreases to 5,000-7,499 miles.

And if you are using your truck for max load or towing or in extreme temperatures, you will need to change the oil between 3,000- 4,999 miles.

Every time you perform an oil change you should also:

  • replace the filter
  • rotate your tires
  • check transmission fluid
  • check brake parts
  • inspent engine cooling system and hoses
  • inspect axle and steering components

Selecting the right oil for your 2016 Ford F150

Follow the link below to buy the right oil type for your engine.

Not sure which engine you have? Look under the hood. There should be some kind of label that determines which engine you have.

Oil TypeOil Capacity
2.7 L EcoBoostSAE 5W-306.0 qt
3.5 L EcoBoostSAE 5W-306.0 qt
3.5 LSAE 5W-206.3 qt
5.0 LSAE 5W-207.7 qt

If you do not choose to buy the recommended Motorcraft oil by Ford, you should try to always buy a synthetic blend of oil with one that has the API certified logo on it.

This will ensure that the oil you are putting in your car conforms to the engine, emission system, and fuel economy standards set by the International Lubricants Specification Advisory Council.

And lastly, DO NOT USE SUPPLEMENTAL ENGINE OIL ADDITIVES!

For more information about your truck, take a look at the Owners manual here!
