Any trailer exceeding 1000 lbs must have its own brake system when using the Tundra and should not exert a tongue weight over 11% of the total trailer weight.
You should always check your manual and weight ratings (on the inside of the driver’s door) for the most accurate information before towing and make sure you are properly equipped.

2022 Toyota Tundra Overview
The 2022 Toyota Tundra comes with a 3.5 L V6 and a 3.5 L V6 Hybrid engine.
It can have either a 5.5 ft, 6.5 ft and 8.1 ft bed. These are referred to as the short, standard and long beds on the truck.
There are two available cab options, the Double cab and the CrewMax. Both cabs allow two rows of seating, but the CrewMax provides more room for the back row.
The Double Cab is only compatible with the Standard and Long bed and the CrewMax is only compatible with the Short and Standard bed.
There are 6 trims in the 2022 Toyota Tundra. These are:
- SR
- SR5
- Limited
- Platinum
- 1794 Edition
- Capstone
Each of these variations has slightly different options available with them including wheel options, bed sizes, cab size, interior colors, engine options

The information here should be used as a guide to finding the towing capacity of your vehicle.
To do so, you will need to find the GVWR and GCWR of your vehicle.
The GVWR will be located on the vehicle certification label on the inside of the driver’s side door.
The GCWR can also be found in this document but you must know:
- your engine
- your cab size
- your bed size
- the drive (4×2 or 4×4)
Your engine can be found by looking under the hood. There should be some type of label identifying the name.
You also can use the VIN decoder on this site: driving-tests.org to identify the specs of your vehicle.
After you have these numbers, you can then calculate the towing and payload capacity.

Towing Capacity by Engine
There are two engine types in the Tundra, one gas and one hybrid engine.
i-Force 3.5 L V6
One of the engine options in the Toyota Tundra is the 3.5 L V6 engine.
There are two versions of this engine in the 2022 Tundra. The 3.5 L V6 engine in the Tundra SR supplies 348 hp @ 5,200 rpm and 405 lb-ft. @2,000 rpm.
For the SR5, Limited, Platinum, and 1794 Edition, the 3.5 L V6 engine supplies 389 hp @ 5,200 rpm and 479 lb-ft @ 2,400 rpm.
In all of these models, the maximum towing capacity is 12,000 lbs.
i-Force MAX 3.5 L V6 Hybrid
The 3.5 L hybrid is a slightly more powerful engine providing 437 hp @ 5,200 rpm and 583 lb-ft @ 2,400 rpm. This comes standard in the TRD Pro and Capstone, and is available on the Limited, Platinum, and 1794 Edition trims.
This engine can tow up to 11,450 lbs with the tow package.
Towing Package for Toyota Tundra
There is no major towing package that has an impact on towing capabilities.
All trims in the 2022 Toyota Tundra come standard with a Class-IV towing hitch receiver (except SR), wiring and Trailer Sway Control.
The SR Tow Package can provide a hitch receiver if desired.
And all trims except SR come with Integrated Trailer Brake Controller and a Tow/Haul driving mode.

What is the max tongue load of a Tundra?
The tongue load is the amount of weight that can be exerted on a trailer hitch.
For most trailers, this value is10-15% of the total trailer weight.
Toyota specifies that for all of their engines a tongue weight of 11% should not be exceeded. That means that a max towing capacity of 12,000 lbs can only have a tongue weight of 1,320 lbs.
In addition, you should not tow above 1000 lbs on any 2022 Tundra without a trailer with a braking system.
Similarly a trailer weight over 5,000 lbs, a weight distributing hitch is required.
