2004 Ford F150 Oil Type and Capacities

The 2004 Ford F150 takes SAE 5W-20 oil in all engine types. Ford recommends this as the only oil to use in these engine types according to their owner’s manual.

This type of engine oil will improve fuel economy and performance durability.

The engine sizes are either 6 or 7 quarts.

When looking at the 2004 Ford F150 owner’s manual, they suggest that you always use the Motorcraft brand of oil and oil filters.

They say that this brand is designed to function perfectly with your F150 and can increase the longevity of your engine.

However, they do specify that this is not an absolute requirement. So long as you use an oil “Certified For Gasoline Engines” by the API (American Petroleum Institute) and ILSAC (International Lubricant Standardization and Approval Committee), you should be fine.

They do mention that using the Motorcraft brand will protect the car warranty.

4.6 L Triton V8 Engine

Though the 4.6 L V8 engine takes the same oil as the 5.4 L which is 5W-20, but depending on the engine manufacturer, takes a different filter.

The difference between the two is listed on the engine valve cover. There will be one of two things listed:

• REP
• Ford Windsor

The 4.6 L Triton V8 engine with the Ford Windsor label in the 2004 Ford F150 engine requires 6.0 q of SAE 5W-20 oil with a Motorcraft FL-400-S oil filter.

The 4.6 L Triton V8 engine in the 2004 Ford F150 (REP) engine requires 6.0 q of SAE 5W-20 oil with a Motorcraft FL-820-S oil filter.

5.4 L Triton V8 Engine

The 5.4 L Triton V8 engine in the 2004 Ford F150 engine requires 7.0 q of SAE 5W-20 oil with a Motorcraft FL-820-S oil filter.
