2018 Ford F150 Oil Type and Capacity

There are many versions of the Ford F150 between trims, engines, cab sizes, bed sizes, and additional packages.

There are only 5 different types of engine options for the 2018 Ford F150.

What type of oil does the 2018 Ford F150 take?

The 2018 Ford F150 has four engine types. Ford recommends that the 2.7 L EcoBoost and 3.5 L EcoBoost take 6.0 qt of SAE 5W-30 oil. The regular 3.3 L engine takes 6.5 qt of SAE 5W-20. The regular 5.0 L engine takes 8.8 qt of SEA 5W-20. And the 3.0 L Turbo Diesel engine takes 6.5 qt of SAE 5W-30.

2018 F150 Engine Types and Specifications

F150 5.0 L V8 Engine

The 5.0 L V8 engine in the 2018 F150 produces 395 hp @ 5,750 RPM and 400 lb.-ft of torque @ 3,500 RPM.

It is the largest engine of the group but doesn’t supply the most power. It essentially sits in the middle of the engine family in terms of hp and torque.

F150 2.7 L EcoBoost Engine

The 2.7L EcoBoost engine in the 2018 F150 provides 325 hp @ 5,000 rpm and 400 lb.-ft of torque @ 2,750 rpm.

The EcoBoost engine includes a turbocharger designed to increase fuel efficiency with stronger power.

The design of this engine actually produces energy and power from the exhaust by using that force to push more air into the engine (What is the EcoBoost Engine?).

F150 3.3 L Engine

The 3.3 L engine is a less powerful version of the 5.0L engine. It produces 290 hp @ 6,500 rpm and 265 lb.-ft of torque @ 4,000 rpm.

This engine is the weakest of the group and also has the lowest towing and payload capacity.

F150 3.5 L EcoBoost Engine

The 3.5 L EcoBoost engine is the turbocharged equivalent of the 3.5 L engine. It produces 375 hp @ 5,000 rpm and 470 lb.-ft @ 3,500.

Continued in 2018 is the High Output 3.5 L EcoBoost. This engine is supplied in the Raptor trim of the F150.

This engine is actually the most powerful engine in the 2018 series.

F150 3.0 Turbo-Diesel Engine

The 3.5 L engine is a less powerful version of the 5.0L engine. It produces 250 hp @ 3,250 rpm and 440 lb.-ft of torque @ 1,750 rpm.

2018 F150 5.0 L V8 Oil Type, Capacity, & Filter

The 5.0 L V8 engine in the Ford F150 takes 8.8 qt of SAE 5W-20 engine oil and uses a Motorcraft FL-500-S filter.

Ford recommends that you use the Motorcraft version of these two items, which I’ve found on Amazon below, but I believe as long as you choose to use synthetic blend oil with an appropriately sized oil filter, you should have no problems.

If you plan to run frequently at cold starts (or running at extremely cold temperatures such as less than -20 F) you should use SAE 0W-20.

2018 F150 2.7 L EcoBoost Oil Type, Capacity, & Filter

The 2.7 L EcoBoost engine in the Ford F150 takes 6.0 qt of SAE 5W-30 engine oil and the Motorcraft FL2062 Oil Filter.

Ford recommends that you use the Motorcraft version of these two items, which I’ve found on Amazon below, but I believe as long as you choose to use synthetic blend oil with an appropriately sized oil filter, you should have no problems.

Ford mentions that for the EcoBoost engines, if you plan to run frequently at cold starts (or running at extremely cold temperatures) you should use SAE 0W-30. There doesn’t appear to be an easily available Motorcraft version of this, so I recommend Mobile 1 full synthetic as a replacement.

2018 F150 3.3 L Oil Type, Capacity, & Filter

The 3.3 L V6 TiVCT engine in the Ford F150 takes 6.0 qt of SAE 5W-20 engine oil and uses the Motorcraft FL-500-S oil filter.

Ford recommends that you use the Motorcraft version of these two items, which I’ve found on Amazon below, but I believe as long as you choose to use synthetic blend oil with an appropriately sized oil filter, you should have no problems.

If you plan to run frequently at cold starts (or running at extremely cold temperatures such as less than -20 F) you should use SAE 0W-20.

Ford recommends that you use the Motorcraft version of these two items, which I’ve found on Amazon below, but I believe as long as you choose to use synthetic blend oil with an appropriately sized oil filter, you should have no problems.

How often should you change your F150 Oil?

According to the 2018 Ford F150 manual, under normal usage conditions, the oil in your truck should be changed every 5,000-10,000 miles (8,000-16,000 km).

For trucks with frequent towing or heavy loading, this decreases to 5,000-7,499 miles.

And if you are using your truck for max load or towing or in extreme temperatures, you will need to change the oil between 3,000- 4,999 miles.

Every time you perform an oil change you should also:

• replace the filter
• rotate your tires
• check transmission fluid
• check brake parts
• inspent engine cooling system and hoses
• inspect axle and steering components
